Stanley Jones, 75, called the HMRC helpline on at least eight occasions over two days to sort out a problem with his tax code. Each time he got the same response - 'Call back later'. He says: 'It's absolutely infuriating. Many pensioners like myself rely on these helplines. They need to be staffed properly.'
Charities say the situation will only get worse as government departments slash their budgets. Paddy Millard, from Tax-Help for Older People, says: 'We are seeing a mass slaughter of services.
