WASHINGTON -- The Middle East peace process must continue, Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, a strong supporter of Israel, told reporters outside the West Wing Tuesday afternoon after a private lunch with President Obama .
Wiesel called the lunch, which he said was kosher, a good "meeting between two friends" and said the pair had spoken about many things and that he believed the president was convinced that the peace process must continue and said there was "no substitute for peace."
"Each side must understand that there is not absolute justice in the world, no absolute peace in the world," he said, when asked what must happen for peace to be achieved. "One side must understand the other's need for reassurance, for respect and sovereignty in its decisions and decision-making."
On relations between the Obama administration and Israel, Wiesel said there had been "moments of tension" but said he thought the tension was gone, which was good.
