Can database help you find cheap van insurance?
No-one wants to pay over the odds for van insurance – and now a new online database may help van drivers find cheaper deals.
The Vehicle Certification Agency, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and the Department of Transport have launched a new database which outlines the best models for consumption and emissions to help van buyers make clear decisions about the right vehicle for them.
The database can benefit van insurance customers too with many preferring to visit second hand dealers to find a bargain. Not only can they budget for a van’s overall costs, but they can then use the information they find on a potential new vehicle to compare van insurance quotes with a comparison website. This will give them a clear picture of insurance costs before they complete a purchase.
How to drive down van insurance costs
Though van insurance is a legal necessity, it needn’t cost the earth if you follow these simple tips:
- Shop around: Comparison websites allow you to compare van insurance quotes from a host of different providers for free.
- Increase your excess: The higher the excess, the lower the premium. Only set the excess at a level you can afford however, in case an accident does occur.
- Don’t let your insurance expire: If you let your existing van insurance expire then you could be deemed lapse and risky by an insurer. So shop around with plenty of time to spare before the policy is up for renewal each year.
- Look for discounts: Many van insurers will offer discounts for good driving, staying accident free, agreeing to a mileage limit or for paying premiums annually instead of monthly. You may even be able to tie in your van insurance with an existing insurance policy – say a car or home policy – and save.
- Security matters: Consider investing in a high quality alarm or immobiliser system for your van and upgrading the door locks. If you can park your van in a garage overnight and in a secure location during the day then let your insurer know.
